2017 DENNIS KENNEDY HEAVY HORSE MEMORIAL COMPETITION

This year on December the 2nd the Victoria Master Farriers will hold a Competition at 9 Lilly Pilly Lane, Kilsyth.

We have obtained the service of Dean Lewis to judge the event. He is highly respected in the industry and as of last December was awarded the Associate of The Worshipful Company of Farriers U.K. We believe this will be a great draw card for our competition.

This will be the second time we have hosted the competition at Darren’s. We believe it is a great location for heavy horse competitions and we wish to hold annually at the property as long as it is a success.

The property is Darren Phelans who was a friend to Dennis Kennedy. It is a fantastic location and is set up like a smaller version of Sovereign Hill.  It has a saloon bar set up for a spit roast dinner in the evening and a shed set up to house the twenty plus carriages he has on display museum style, this will also be where we hold the classes if the weather requires us to have shelter.

We held a competition there in 2015; farriers from Victoria and Interstate supported it.  It also attracted an external crowd of around 60 spectators without a lot of advertising. This competition will be advertised in heavy horse and harness magazines and newsletters, as we believe this is an untapped market for the VMFA. This time we are hoping to double that crowd and have a great family day as well as a great industry day.

This year we are inviting Farriers and Blacksmiths from all associations in Australia and New Zealand. There will be a Three Man Team event Forging classes for novice, intermediate and open competitors and judges choice classes for novice, intermediate and open competitors.

This will ensure there will be something for all farriers from apprentices through to seasoned competitors.

We will also have a home exhibit class for blacksmiths to come along and display their art that they have created at home.

This will be more than just a competition. We want the day to be a competition, but also be a family fun day for all industry participants. We will provide lunch and a spit roast for dinner.  There will also be a jumping castle and entertainment for the children.

John Bunting
